12 Principles of Animation

1. Principle of animation is Squash and stretch, this refers to the object in motion changing in shape as it moves in certain directions. A good example is a ball bouncing, it will expand and contract as it moves from ground to air.

2. Anticipation uses a pause or motion to communicate an important or powerful moment is about to take place.

3. Staging presents the idea or event that you want the viewers to watch.

4. Straight ahead and pose to pose, the first is a series of motion drawing after drawing till the end result is met. while the last draws beginning to end then fills the in between later.

5. Follow through & overlapping action, shows the motion of objects or parts attached to characters that move even after characters motions.

6. Slow in slow out, refers to slow movement building speed and slows as the animation progresses.

7. Arcs refer to movement being more organic and realistic, curved oppose to mechanical and straight forward.

8. Secondary action, added gestures to the main action which gives a more realistic motion.

9. Timing, this effect the personality of the animation depending on the amount of frames used in the animation. The more drawings the slower and less equals faster.

10. Exaggeration, this refers to every action or pose needing added time or faster frame rate to get an expression across ro make an idea more convincing.

11. Solid drawing, a figure from all angles making the character look as if they were in a three dimensional space. This requires an understanding of characters from all angles.

12. Appeal, pleasing look to the character and simple.
